Our Story

Melange (muh . laanj) ~
“a composition made of miscellaneous mixtures”

Café Mélange was born out of a collective passion to bring together a group of restaurants with a unified vision:
  • to introduce the rich, eclectic flavors of the African diaspora to the hallowed walls of City Hall
  • to shine a spotlight on the talented chefs and restaurateurs in the underserved 3rd Street-Bayview corridor
(L-R) Olton Rensch, Tallio’s Coffee & Tea; Mayor London Breed; Dontaye Ball, Gumbo Social; Eskender Aseged, Radio Africa & Kitchen; Yvonne Hines, Yvonne’s Southern Sweets
Café Mélange is a unique culinary opportunity where select Black-owned restaurateurs bring flavors, time-honored traditions and generational recipes of African and African-American cuisine to the thousands who walk the steps of San Francisco’s landmark People’s Palace.

Nestled in the Ground Floor, City Hall, Café Mélange is the “Third Space” – for early meetings, lunchtime gatherings, a wedding party hangout, a spot to plug into wi-fi, or simply a quiet, friendly respite to reflect and recharge.
